Court is in session. The secular forces of the world have accused God of being a tyrannical fraud created in the minds of naive, superstitious humans. The focus of their allegations is a particularly arrogant group of Jesus followers that claim He is the way, and the truth, and the life and that no one comes to the Father except through him. You have been summoned to hear the testimony and despite repeated attempts at avoiding jury duty find that you are without excuse for not hearing the matter. As you take your seat in the jury box and begin to hear from the witnesses you quickly realize this isn’t small claims court; rather, it is the Supreme Court. It appears that your verdict may not only become the law of the land but also a personal legal precedent. You had been told that Christianity was a cold case but this evidence appears to be hot off the press and your heart burns within you. You hear a series of expert witnesses from science, philosophy, history, and archeology all offer their scholarly testimony. The evidence includes a hand writing sample of God’s signature in the cell, a motive as the First-Cause, footprints indelibly cast in the dust of time, and the written testimony of an unimpeachable series of first-hand witnesses. It appears that each discipline has a significant amount of proof for not only God’s existence but also His ongoing walk with mankind. You are quick to note that this evidence isn’t hearsay because God has already spoken His WORD on the matter. The prosecution has little to offer except to question the mental competence of the witnesses who they claim suffer from a God Delusion. Sadly, as they try to make the case that belief in God is just blind faith, they don’t seem to have enough faith to be an atheist either. As the trial draws to a close, the judge gives his final instructions. He makes it clear that this case will not end in a hung jury because the Evidence Demands A Verdict. Outside the courtroom, the powers and principalities, and a great cloud of witnesses, both lean in to hear your verdict. What will it be?
One the most important Christian apologetic books of all time, Evidence That Demands A Verdict, has been updated and will be released on October 3rd of this year. Since the book was first released in the 1970’s, it has had a profound impact on both Christians and non-Christians alike. The author, Josh McDowell, through his compelling story, sincerity, and clarity of thought, helped popularize apologetics and now with the help of his son, Sean, have taken it to the next level. They have meticulously gathered new evidence in support of a Biblical worldview in a way that makes it relevant to contemporary culture. This updated version leaves no stone unturned. Josh and Sean present a convincing case that is both well reasoned and equitable. They don’t shy away from controversy but face it head on by allowing all sides to speak. They also recognize that controversy exists within the church itself and gives each side a fair hearing. The book is carefully researched and draws on the thoughts of prominent scholars both inside and outside of academia. As someone who is very active in Christian apologetics, I believe this book will be indispensable to anyone serious about their Christian faith. It should be a part of every church library and Christian school classroom. I am grateful that Josh and Sean took on this monumental task because the church is richer for it.
Academicians have tried to bury God under piles of scholarship for centuries, but ironically their work has become a pedestal upon which He stands out above the crowd. If you are a believer, I encourage you to read this book to further bolster your faith, but if you are a skeptic, I encourage you to hear the evidence and make your own decision. God honors our free will by allowing us to make our own choice, and while it can be intimidating to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, the Good News is that He doesn’t leave us without a Counselor. We can choose to represent ourselves or hire Jesus as our legal representative but either way we need to remember that when all is said and done, there is no afterlife court of appeals.
